The Ohio Environmental Fellowship Program
The Ohio Environmental Fellowship Program is a unique internship opportunity managed by the Environment Ohio Research and Policy Center with the generous support of the George Gund Foundation and with assistance from the Ohio Environmental Council. The program was created to help Ohio's undergraduate and graduate-level students study, learn about, and act on the pressing environmental challenges facing our state. The program also serves to connect Ohio's premiere environmental organizations with much needed, qualified interns and helps to identify and train potential staff for these groups.
The Ohio Environmental Fellowship Program gives smart, self-directed college students the hands-on training needed to assume a high level of responsibility in the environmental movement. Interns work side-by-side with Ohio's top environmental researchers, attorneys, scientists, and advocates on issues such as promoting renewable energy solutions, fighting for clean air and water, and protecting and restoring Lake Erie. Participants learn how to investigate urgent problems, devise practical solutions, and convince the media and decision-makers to pay attention and take action.
Through the Ohio Environmental Fellowship Program, students gain an educational experience in democratic citizenship. Students also get a chance to tackle some of Ohio's biggest problems, take action, and win concrete changes that improve the quality of our lives.
Fellowships That Put Students' Education To Work On Real-World Problems
Interns work directly with
the staff at Environment Ohio and another premier environmental non-profit
organization in Ohio.
Previous students have worked with one of over 20 organizations including Environment Ohio,
Sierra Club, Ohio Environmental Council, Ohio League of Conservation Voters,
Audubon Ohio,
Earth Day Coalition, and Greater Ohio. Together the organizations work with their student intern to create
an individually tailored program focused on the student’s interests, the needs
of the organization, and the specific issues at hand.
Training The Next
Environmental Leaders
The Ohio Environmental
Fellowship Program gives topnotch training to students who want to launch an
environmental career. In one quarter, the program turns students' passion for
change into the concrete skills and hands-on experience it takes to be a leader
in the environmental movement.
Interns will learn a wide
range of grassroots organizing skills and develop a familiarity with campaign
strategy. Participants are introduced to different organizing models and
provided substantive background on environmental issues and campaigns. Skills
trainings include: building a volunteer group, fundraising, increasing public
awareness, securing media coverage, developing a campaign, and collaborating
with other groups.
Selection Requirements
Each quarter, 10 students
are selected to participate in the Ohio Environmental Fellowship Program. The
program starts with a one-day classroom training at the beginning of the
session. After the classroom training, interns will be assigned to work on a
campaign for a local environmental group. Participants will work 10 to 15 hours
per week each week of the ten-week program and earn a $500 stipend at the
conclusion of the program. We will also assist students in earning class credit
for their internship.
