ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMS
For the past two years, Environment Ohio fought hard to pass legislation instituting energy efficiency programs across Ohio.
In May, 2008 Governor Strickland signed into a law an Environment Ohio backed-policy that could result in significant energy savings through energy efficiency programs. This summer and fall, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio will be determining how these programs work, and what the options are for Ohioans to save money and help save the environment.
WHAT ARE THE OHIO ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMS?
Recognizing that every $1 spent on energy efficiency saves up to $3 off customer energy bills, Ohio law now requires our major utilities Duke Energy, American Electric Power, First Energy (which owns the Ohio Edison Company, The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, and The Toledo Edison Company), and Dayton Power and Light, to institute energy efficiency programs to curb our growing energy demands.
These programs will offer a variety of residential, commercial, industrial, and public sector solutions to increase energy efficiency throughout our state.
Environment Ohio is working hard to ensure that these utility programs include discounts on compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), incentives for turning in old refrigerators and air conditioners, and other savings opportunities for Ohio families and businesses. In addition, we are working to ensure that there are additional low income energy efficiency programs, technical assistance programs, and training and education programs.
HOW CAN I TAKE ADVANTAGE?
Right now, these programs are under development at the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. In order to weigh in on these programs go to our action page to take action. Also check out our events page to learn more about what is going on in your area.
CFL HEADQUARTERS
Did you know that if every Ohio household replaced five incandescent light bulbs with five compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), we would save enough energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes? And not only do CFLs use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, they last up to 10 times longer.
To learn more about CFL bulbs -- including proper CFL disposal, CFL recycling locations, a CFL savings calculator, and more -- check out our Environment Ohio CFL Headquarters.
