Global warming update
In response to increasing criticism
of the U.S. record on global warming, both internationally and by
environmental advocates in the states, President Bush urged major
polluting nations to agree to non-binding targets for reducing global
warming pollution by the end of next year.
Instead of the
mandatory emission reductions scientists and advocates say are
necessary, President Bush called for “aspirational goals.” Under the
Bush plan, countries would work independently for the next 10 to 20
years to develop strategies to “improve energy security, reduce air
pollution, and also reduce greenhouse gases.”
In response, our
chief advocate on the issue, Ben Dunham, told the media, “Asking
industries nicely to reduce their emissions isn’t going to work; we
need real action.”
