A new report “Public Health at Risk: The Dangers Posed By Sewage Pollution In Ohio’s Lake Erie Basin” released today by the Ohio Public Interest Research Group (Ohio PIRG) shows that health-threatening bacteria, parasites and viruses found in sewage are widely detected in Lake Erie’s waters.

The Bush administration issued a final rule today that could increase the amount of pollution in America’s waterways. Under the U.S. EPA rule, water polluted with toxic chemicals, bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants now can be dumped into rivers, lakes and streams without a Clean Water Act permit.

(Columbus, Ohio) Environment Ohio issued a new report today on water efficiency to boost its case for the Great Lakes Compact that is swiftly moving in Congress. The report - Using Water Wisely - calculates that six Southwestern states could save as much as 1.86 trillion gallons of water per year by dramatically improving efficiency of water use.

Washington, DC Environment Ohio applauded the U.S. House of Representatives for voting (390 to 25) to pass the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin Water Resources Compact (S.J.Res. 45), which ensures more sustainable use of Great Lakes water. The compact addresses challenges such as growing demand for water and increased pressure to divert water from the lakes.

Environment Ohio applauds Senators Levin (Mich.) and Voinovich (Ohio) and the U.S. Senate for passing legislation yesterday to clean up toxic contamination in the Great Lakes. The Senate voted for the Great Lakes Legacy Reauthorization Act (H.R. 6460), which authorizes $54 million a year for two years in funding to clean up toxic pollution.

A new report “Sewage Overflow: Billions of Gallons of Sewage Contaminate Lake Erie” released today by Ohio PIRG reveals that more than eight billion gallons of sewage contaminated Lake Erie and waterways in the Lake Erie watershed basin from January 2004 – December 2004.

After massive public outcry from citizens across the Great Lakes region and much of the country, including nearly 98,000 public comments, the Bush administration's EPA has withdrawn its controversial plan that would have let partially treated sewage flow into Ohio's waterways, including Lake Erie.
